New artist-in-residence: Sanaa Humayun

Sanaa Humayun, "I swallow my own fist", 2026, silkscreen & flocking on woven cloth, 17 x 24" each. Ph. by Daniela Monedero

Sanaa Humayun (she/her) is an artist, writer, & curator, living and working in Hamilton, ON.
Her practice opens up spaces for serious play, investigates the foibles of modern cultural work under late-stage capitalism, and offers relationality as a tool to build something better under it.

During her month-long residency at Lottozero, Sanaa explored the possibilities of screen printing and digital weaving, experimenting with the intersections between the two techniques. Drawing on her background in painting, she approached textiles as a space for layering, repetition, and transformation: through shifts in scale, repetition, and layering. These explorations echo her broader reflections on desire, and the ways it persists, transforms, and negotiates conditions of scarcity and constraint.

She is the Artistic Director at Hamilton Artists Inc. Along with Kiona Callihoo Ligtvoet, Sanaa co-organizes Making Space - a peer mentorship group for early-career BIPOC artists. You can usually find her laughing a little too loudly with her friends in public places.

Her residency is supported by the Canada Council for the Arts.
